I Hope You Go Deaf

So I was on the bus this morning and someone was listening to music. It sounded like the cheezy pop trash all the bars on crescent st. not sponsored by CHOM FM play every saturday night. Dressed in fashionably gino wear with the gold chain bling bling and slick oily hair. It was obvious to everyone around him just how much he was enjoying his Britney Spears spinoff music as his body moved in rhythm to his horrible mp3 collection.

The old woman sitting beside me did not share in his musical tastes. Those white ear buds Apple uses to get everyone to be walking ads for iPod's will betray every last note to anyone within a short radius from you, such as sitting beside or infront of you on the bus. Except you don't really hear the music with crystal clarity so much as you hear filtered, distorted faux noise with a sort of harmonic structure.

The old lady with her hair covering, cane, wearing that green puffy jacket old people wear all the time, politely asked (in a way only an old lady can) the gino to turn down his music. This asshole said "I'm free to do what I want, you're free to sit somewhere else.". I looked around, and there was no where else to sit.

I love listening to music, and I love to listen to it loudly, even when I'm on the bus. Which is why I invested in a great pair of Sennheiser headphones. Not willing to invest in a good pair of headphones? Then you're not passionate enough about music to be listening to it so loudly in the first place and should not be disturbing others on the bus with your shitty selection of noise pollution.

There is no excuse. One day's worth of work at $7/hr will get you a pair of headphones that won't leak sound. It may not sound as good as my mighty Sennheisers but it will at least block the music from escaping your head so old ladies everywhere can take the bus in the peace.

Sometimes I really hate the "Me Generation"...

Guys like that eventually get theirs. They are easy to sneak up on and knock out.

I'd rather someone have their music on loud and minding their own business, then talking super loud on a cell phone or moving around too much.

I don't know... this just seems like one of those things to get pissed off at just for the sake of getting pissed off. He wasn't hurting anyone.

People talking super loudly on their cell phone is as annoying as the guy with the loud music that's for sure.

What's pissing me off about people who listen to their music loudly is that they get to listen to the music they want usually for these purposes: 1- it makes them happy 2- to relax 3- to vent coz their pissed. Well if they're angry they don't need to make others around them as angry. And whether they listen to music loudly for reason 1,2 or 3 the people around them should have the right to feel happy & relax also. Not everyone wants to listen to their music loudly. Imagine if we all started turning up the volume because the asshole next to us won't turn his down.. i wouldn't want to be the person without earphones sitting on the bus with an headache at that moment!

Sometimes i'd like to see these girls and guys on a day where they feel shitty (as in: worked 12hours in a row, got an headache, nauseous because pregnant, etc) and put them on a bus next to someone who's playing music they hate very loudly...

As much as i'm gonna sound oldass for saying so, old-school 70's style bigass "headphones that cover the entire ear" headphones are still better than most of what's out there today. In fact, the really expensive ones nowdays are made in that style.

Can't agree with you there, sorry. I have a pair of Shure E4C inner ear headphones and they're wonderful. They're triple-flanged, which takes a bit of getting used to, but it means that they can effectively block out the noise of a jet engine. It also means that, in day to day wear, you don't need to pump up the volume to harmful levels to be able to enjoy your music and won't cause noise polution to others. They're also a hell of a lot smaller than over-ear headphones and more practical to carry around.

Bit pricey, but damn if they're not worth every penny!

Okay, as much as the rants are mildly-even-if-uselessly-entertaining, I wonder how the periodical whining gig you got there contributes to the community.

Start a website, organize a walk-a-thon, do something, but if you're to denunciate something, do it in some way that will have an impact instead of just seeking a pat on the back here.

[info]v0idnull

May 23 2007, 14:26:26 UTC 5 years ago

It contributes by offering entertainment and sparks discussion. I find these to be excellent contributions to a community of any kind. I'm sorry if you find these posts offensive, useless, mild, trivial, or mundane, but I guess being part of a community involves a little give or take, which is the inherent point of the whole rant.

However, the difference between me and the annoying gino on the bus is that ignoring me is far easier, you simply don't read anything I post.

At least I won't delete your comment for being blatantly off topic...

Oh this is one of my absolute top pet peeves. GAAAAAAAAH.

For some reason the "leaked" music just irritates me more than louder noises more generally recognized as annoying - I'd generally chose to listen to nails on a blackboard over the bits and pieces of someone else's music. It's just loud enough to be irritating but not present enough to tune out.

*shudder*
I actually have taken to carrying around a music player (and/or earplugs) just to attempt to distract myself from other people's annoying music. How sad is that?

...How does this have anything to do with "Montreal"?

[info]v0idnull

May 23 2007, 16:45:08 UTC 5 years ago

well

montrealers were involved
it happened on a montreal bus
in montreal
and affects other montrealers down the road.

I'd say it has a lot to do with Montreal

The other one that's even MORE annoying is those kids who use their cell phones as radios, and blare their music all over the bus. I've told them to turn it down before, they piss me off.

[info]vampire_engel

May 24 2007, 01:19:47 UTC 5 years ago

Oh you know what beats that? Those hand held playstations!!!! They piss me off when they either watch a movie, listen to music, play a game etc and you can hear it when you are a few seats away ON THE METRO! ... I am sure that damn thing comes with a plug for earphones!!!!

The loud music drives me nuts, especially when it drowns out what I am listening to!!! I wish these people knew what that does to their hearing... but I am sure they will once they hit their senior years.

I don't know about everyone else, but in 10 years I am going to put a lot of stock into hearing aid companies. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST FOLKS!1!

[info]v0idnull

May 23 2007, 17:53:35 UTC 5 years ago

why wait ten years?

I say, invest NOW while they are cheap. Baby boomers are retiring soon, then comes their deaf offspring. Now is a good time to be a hearing aid manufacturer.

It couldn't've been that loud?! I usually wear my ginormous headphones, but in the summer I wear disposable headphones from the dollarstore because it's too damn hot. Even at the loudest, they're not distracting to anyone, unless in a library.

[info]v0idnull

May 23 2007, 18:12:03 UTC 5 years ago

iPods can go as loud as +110dB. Listening full blast, most generic earbuds will leak sound profusely. Trust me, it was THAT loud.

Amen. I all too often get stuck between two people listening to conflicting music way too loud [rap in one year, sappy pop stuff in the other].
It's most annoying when I'm trying to read or study something on my way to class.

I've always worried about my headphones being loud and obnoxious. Whenever I think my music may be really loud, I take them off and put them around my neck. If I can still hear anything, I'll turn it down. I'll blast my music when I'm at home.

And if they've got an iPod, they can damn well afford a good pair of Sennheisers.

"Whenever I think my music may be really loud, I take them off and put them around my neck. If I can still hear anything, I'll turn it down."

I thought I was the only weird one to do that hehe.

I also blocked my iPod volume at about halfway just so that I don't fuck up my own hearing or accidentaly turn it up too high by brushing against it.

If people weren't so goddamn vapid/inconsiderate enough to have mindless conversations in public! On the BUS! REALLY LOUDLY OMGZ LIKE I KNOW!!, people like me wouldn't be wearing headphones to drown their idiocy out.

Sorry.

P.S. I am not from Montreal; this makes my comment irrelevant.

Music leaking from earphones and unjustified disrespect towards the elderly are ultimate pet peeves of mine, so I agree with you 100%.

[info]punzerel

May 25 2007, 02:55:15 UTC 5 years ago

Yeah, when that happens, I have no compunctions about talking to my sister loudly about how crappy their taste in music is (it's never anyone with good music). I understand that sometimes you have to turn it up loud to hear, but I think it's possible to still hear it without blasting it across the bus.
